CATIA Part Design Exam

  • Recommended Preparation course:  CATIA V5 Fundamentals or CATIA V6 Mechanical Design Fundamentals
  • Exam description: includes several problem sets focusing on modelling and modification of basic, intermediate and advanced parts. It also includes multiple choice questions on basic Drafting principles
  • Topics covered:  Sketch features, tools and relations; Basic and dress-up features such as pads, pockets, shafts, fillets, chamfers, patterns; Analysis and modification of the geometry, sketch offset, materials, measures, mass properties; Drafting questions on views, dimensions, title blocks.

CATIA Assembly Design Exam

  • Recommended Preparation course:  CATIA V5 Fundamentals or CATIA V6 Mechanical Design Fundamentals
  • Exam description: includes several problem sets focusing on building and modifying two assemblies. It includes multiple choice questions on basic Drafting principles
  • Topics covered: Creation and modification of assemblies;  Placing of the base part, inserting components;  Constraints, reference geometry;  Modification of key parameters in assembly; Analysis, measures, interferences, replacement; Drafting: views, bill of materials, exploded views.

CATIA Surface Design Exam

  • Recommended Preparation course:  CATIA Surface Design
  • Exam description: includes several problem sets focusing on creation, modification and analysis of wireframe and surfaces.
  • Topics covered:  Wireframe: points, planes, repetitions, line, axis, ellipse, circle, connect curve, spline, axis system; Creation, modification and analysis of surfaces: helix, boundary, extrude, project curve, circular pattern, revolve, sweep, fill, multi-section surface, join, split, trim, fillets, symmetry, geometrical sets, etc.

  • To become a Certified CATIA V5 Mechanical Design Specialist you need to pass the CATIA V5 Part Design exam and the CATIA Assembly Design exam.
  • To become a Certified CATIA V5 Mechanical Surface Design Specialist you need to pass the CATIA V5 Part Design exam and the CATIA Surface Design exam.


As a Certified CATIA Expert, you prove your knowledge and skills with CATIA advanced modelling techniques after solid training and between six and twelve months of advanced hands-on practice and work experience* in either Part, Assembly or Surface Design.

CATIA Part Design Expert Exam

  • CATIA: V5R19 and higher
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Targeted audience: CATIA users
  • Recommended Preparation course:  CATIA V5 Mechanical Design Expert or CATIA Part Design Expert
  • Exam description: the exam includes several problem sets focusing on multi-body methodology, part analysis, and advanced part design features
  • Topics covered: creating solid using multiple bodies, combining solids using Boolean operations, creating intersecting elements, analysing curvature, creating multi-sections solids and stiffeners, and instantiating a power copy.

CATIA V5 Assembly Design Expert Exam

  • CATIA: V5R19 and higher
  • Duration: 120 minutes
  • Targeted audience: CATIA users
  • Recommended Preparation course: CATIA V5 Mechanical Design Expert or CATIA Product Design Expert
  • Exam description: the exam includes several problem sets focusing on assembly advanced features such as assembly analysis, optimisation, and flexible sub-assemblies
  • Topics covered: Constraints and replacing components, detecting clashes, sectioning assembly, creating BOM, publication, creating sub-assemblies and flexible sub-assemblies.

CATIA V5 Surface Design Expert exam

  • CATIAV5R19 and higher
  • Duration: 120 minutes
  • Targeted audience: CATIA users
  • Recommended Preparation course:  CATIA Surface Design Expert
  • Exam description: the exam includes several problem sets focusing on wireframe analysis, advanced surface creation, advanced blending operations and surface analysis.
  • Topics covered:  Analysing the connection between curves, connecting and smoothing curves, creating adaptive swept surfaces and replacing inputs, creating different types of blends for surfaces, analysing connection between surfaces, analysing curvature and moldability etc.

Getting certified requires serious preparation. In order to get ready for an exam, we recommend you to go through the following steps

  1. Get trained on the course(s) as specified in the recommended learning path (see picture) and in the exam descriptions. To attend an instructor-led class, please contact us.
  2. To complement your training and reinforce your skills, review the topics that were covered in the course(s) and in particular those where you could improve, and practice as much as possible, especially on the topics included in the exam (refer to exam description).
  3. The more you practice, the better. In order to get ready to take a real exam, sample exams are available online. They are meant to give you a better understanding of the exam and question formats. They also give you the opportunity to get familiar with the steps to start an exam.  Sample exams are free for unlimited attempts and accessible anytime via the same platform as the real exams.

The purpose of sample exams is to demonstrate the format of an online exam (interface, different question formats etc).

Going through a sample exam, you will also get familiar with the following main steps:

  • Connect to the testing platform via an internet browser
  • Download, install and run the TesterPRO Client on your machine using the default options
  • Create your personal account (or login if you already have one)
  • Select exam and desired language if any
  • Start the exam.

The entry screen gives you detailed information on the exam. Once you click on Start, the timer is started. In general, an exam consists of problem descriptions, question explanations and questions. Each screen must be completed by either answering the question or by checking the "continue" button.

Navigation: you can go back and forth in the exam to view or review questions and answers. The "Summary Screen" button displays the current status of all questions. Once you click on "End Test" the exam is over and you will not be able to return to it.

Screen layout: a typical screen is divided into three areas:

  • Questions statements and instructions
  • Images (you can pick an image and zoom in or out)
  • Answers (Multiple choices and single correct answer, multiple choice and multiple answers, entry field, multiple entry fields)

Important notes:

  • To save time it is recommended to launch the 3DS applications before starting the exam.
  • For certain questions, you will have to download a file (zip file including start data such as material, parts, products or 3dxml) in order to be able to perform the scenario.

If you are a student you should ask your professor whether your university or school has a Dassault Systèmes Academic Certification Center where you can take the exams.

Validating Your Certification

After you successfully pass the exam or exams needed to certify, you can access your digital certificate in your user account. Digital certificates are secured and show a unique identifier and QR code that allow you to authenticate your certification online. You will also receive a digital logo that you can use to promote your certification.
