Windscreen_Wiper_1.pngVirtual Product Development (VPD) has made considerable leaps in development over the last 10 years. CAD and DMU tools have specifically contributed to the fit and form aspects of product development, but haven’t really addressed the functional element of product development.

The contribution many CAD packages make to the functional element of product development is the Kinematics of mechanism motion. This is used to make sure that the right paths are followed within acceptable speed ranges without causing clashes between components.

Kinematics is able to provide some detail concerning the displacement, velocity and acceleration of components in a mechanism under the effect of an applied displacement, velocity or acceleration. Kinematics can also tell us a bit about the extent to which a component comes into contact with other parts of the mechanism. …
