As the UK economy starts to recover, Desktop Engineering (DTE), a strategic business partner of ICAM Technologies Corporation (ICAM), is reporting growing interest within the manufacturing sector for NC post-processing solutions that are CAM independent.Geoff Haines, managing director at DTE, said: “Over the last twelve months we have seen significant demand for ICAM’s post processing solutions and in particular SmartPATH. One of the main reasons is that if you deploy SmartPATH you have the flexibility to migrate a part program between CNC machines, which ultimately reduces CAM programming time and fixture design time. We are currently in discussion with a number of machine tool and cutter manufacturers who are attracted by the products time and cost benefits.”

ICAM’s customers benefit from dramatic improvements to CNC machine optimization, NC programmer productivity and manufacturing process efficiency. In the UK, DTE supplies ICAM’s complete Integrated Post-Processing, Simulation & Emulation (Integrated PSE) solutions to companies that use the most popular CAM Systems, such as CATIA and SIEMENS NX CAM.

SmartPATH is a solution designed to automatically optimise rapid positioning toolpath motions generated by CAD/CAM systems. The software provides savings in terms of both CNC run-time positioning and CAD/CAM toolpath preparation.

Rapid positioning motions generated by CAD/CAM software do not take into account machine tool kinematics, workpiece setup and travel limitations and, therefore, places the burden of responsibility for safe and efficient positioning onto the NC programmer. Rapid positioning toolpaths are frequently redeveloped and verified by the NC programmer when migrating programs from one CNC machine to another.

SmartPATH, however, identifies inefficient and unsafe positioning motions and automatically replaces them with minimised collision free safe motions based on the actual machine tool kinematics, physical travel limits, axes positioning rates and the dynamically changing state of the in-process stock.

Haines concluded:

“ICAM’s technologies complement our existing portfolio which enables us to offer a more comprehensive service to the manufacturing sector.”
